The practical problem
Most organisations do not make standalone sustainability decisions. They make decisions about applications, cloud consumption, infrastructure, resilience, procurement, cost and asset lifecycle. Those decisions already shape environmental outcomes—even when carbon was not the reason the work began.
An application retirement may begin as portfolio simplification. Rightsizing may begin as cost control. Extending hardware life may begin as capital avoidance. Environmental benefits can follow, but they can also conflict with other objectives.
SDAF does not require sustainability to lead the decision. SDAF requires sustainability to be visible within the decision.
Decision motivation and decision quality are different
A cost-led decision is not automatically environmentally sound. A lower-cost option may increase lifecycle impact, reduce circularity or create future environmental exposure. Conversely, an environmentally preferable option may require investment, introduce operational trade-offs or depend on uncertain evidence.
The governance task is therefore not to force one priority above all others. It is to keep financial, environmental, lifecycle, technical and evidence consequences distinct enough to be understood together.
Where visibility belongs
- Application portfolio and rationalisation reviews.
- Architecture review boards and design authorities.
- FinOps optimisation and cloud transformation reviews.
- Procurement evaluations and supplier comparisons.
- Technology refresh and asset-lifecycle planning.
SDAF provides the environmental, lifecycle and evidence layer that can be introduced into those existing forums without creating a parallel approval structure.
The governance outcome
The goal is not a sustainability score. It is a reviewable recommendation showing where objectives align, where they conflict, what evidence supports the conclusion and which conditions must be satisfied before implementation.
Apply the principle
Use Studio to structure a real decision, or use the Enterprise Integration Playbook to place SDAF within existing governance.
