Decision governance

The Reviewable Decision Record

A sustainability report describes outcomes. A reviewable decision record preserves how and why a consequential choice was made.

Begin with the decision

State the decision, owner, timing and alternatives before calculating impacts. Define the functional unit and confirm that the options deliver an equivalent outcome. Record what is inside and outside the assessment boundary.

Preserve the evidence structure

For every material input, retain its source, date, applicability, provenance classification and confidence qualification. Keep assumptions and missing evidence explicit rather than allowing them to disappear into a calculated result.

Show competing signals

Environmental, financial, lifecycle and operational findings may align, but mature governance must also show when they conflict. The decision record should explain the drivers of the recommendation without pretending that one dimension made the choice alone.

Record conditions and authority

A recommendation may be ready, conditional, inconclusive or non-conformant. Record open conditions, verification obligations, accepted risks, the accountable decision owner and the formal approval state.

The objective is not merely to reproduce the calculation. It is to reconstruct the decision.

Verify after implementation

Compare measured outcomes with the assumptions used during approval. Capture lessons, update evidence and preserve deviations. This closes the loop between assessment, governance and operational reality.

Create the record
